By Jo Alelsto. With growing concern about global warming and rising energy prices affecting the real estate industry, high-performance buildings and sustainable development are becoming increasingly important to homeowners and developers around the globe. To achieve this, building services must be optimized both in terms of performance and on how they respond to the building, in order to ensure the most efficient solution. A holistic approach to design and development is required in order to achieve a reduction in the environmental footprint of a development.

Today, more and more residential buildings are gradually adapting the concept of sustainability. They do not just use materials that are easy on the budget and nice to look at, but they also make sure that they are environmental friendly.

Among the different factors of promoting sustainable development in homes and offices, sustainable painting is one of the most important. Sustainable painting and green living are popular phrases among consumers. Home and building owners would like to be environmentally responsible without sacrificing modern luxury in their homes. The key is to understand the viability of the materials available in terms of sustainability.

For painting experts, they know that when it comes to sustainability they need to use painting products that offer long term durability and lifespan while consuming the least resources after the application is complete. In other words, the need to change the colors of your walls or your home in totality adds to the need to use more products and consume more resources.

Today, more and more paint manufacturers are trying to produce paint products that are more environmentally friendly. Thanks to the modern civilization, they now realize the importance of preserving our environment.

At home, you can also promote sustainable painting in your own terms by doing the following:

1. Reducing materials used

Since painting can sometimes be a tough job especially if you are not prepared or if you do not know how to start your project, it is best to come up with a good plan first before you embark on the task. As you plan, you can roughly estimate the necessary materials for your painting project. Try to buy materials that are only needed in a specific area.

For example, you can start with one room first. Calculate the amount of paint needed to cover the whole area. If you want to finish the job as fast as you can, you may opt for spray painting. Spray nozzles regulate the flow of liquid from the can, which would eventually help you cover the walls in no time.

The idea is to reduce the amount of materials you will use in each painting job. The less materials you consume, the lower cost it would be for manufacturers to produce paint products and, thus, the lower resources used.

The problem with most consumers is that to save on money, they buy large containers of paint. These are actually larger than what they really need. In the end, they just leave these extra paint products in their garage or basement area thinking to use it in the future. In reality, it will just sit there for more than 10 years or so and will only be rediscovered once they have decided to clean the area. Sad to say, it can never be used by that time and so the only thing to do is to throw it out. What happens to the money they have saved from discounts? It gets thrown out as well, including the resources used to manufacture that paint.

2. Recycle or reuse

Recycling will not only save you money but will also help save the environment. The lesser demand for these products, manufacturers will produce less. So if you still have a good paint brush, try reusing them.

Keep these things in mind and you will be on your way to sustainable development for your home. You don’t have to be an environmentalist or an expert on sustainability to achieve this.

By Marcy Tate. Choosing paint can be confusing at first as there are so many paints on the market. But with a little understanding of the different types of paint, you will quickly become a paint finish expert!

The most common types of paint are: Flat, satin or eggshell, semi-gloss, and gloss.

What is Paint Sheen?
Paint sheen is the level of glossiness in paint. In other words, high gloss paint will make your walls look somewhat shiny while a flat paint won’t have any shine. This is important for you because certain sheen paints a better for certain rooms in your home. For example, flat paint conceals scratches and other pre existing wall imperfections well, so it would be a good choice for hallway walls in a household with children. Read below to learn about each paint sheen type.

Flat Paint

Commonly used on most walls

Lowest sheen

Smooth, matte finish

Non-reflective

Conceals wall imperfections

Best for painting uneven surfaces or drywall

Satin or Eggshell

Low-luster

Slight sheen

Brings warmth and depth to a room

Easier to clean than compared to flat paint

Semi-Gloss

Very durable

Easiest to clean

Does NOT conceal imperfections

Often used in kitchens and bathrooms

Also frequently used in children’s bedrooms

Gloss

Most durable of all paints

Highest sheen

Used for doors being that it is so durable

Good for trimming baseboard and door frames

Additional Considerations: Oil or Latex Paint?
Most paints come with a base option of oil or latex. Your decision will be based on several factors such as what surface you will be painting and what room you will be applying the paint to.

Oil Paint

Better Abrasion resistance

Higher gloss

More durable then latex

Smoother application than latex

Seals stains well

Harder to clean up after using oil based paint

Latex Paint

More popular because It’s easier to clean up, less odor, and overall easier to manage

Water Based

Fast drying

Easy to apply

Resists yellowing, fading and mildew

Good for metal surfaces

Best bet for kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms

By Vanessa Born. Professional help is something that all homeowners should look into when remodeling their home. The skill and training that these contractors possess can make a project go very smoothly and with relative ease, something that many projects are in desperate need of. When considering home improvement, it is important to remember how difficult and complicated the work can get.

Finding a contracted painter can be the saving grace that a home improvement project is screaming for. Many homeowners get in over their heads when it comes to remodeling their house and bite off way more than they can chew. Avoiding this scenario is obviously the best advice for homeowners, but when avoidance is no longer an option, calling a contracted painter can help to smooth things over and get the project back on track. Often times, this is what homeowners need to ensure that the project is completed in a timely manner and with the best quality possible.

Getting in way over their head is a practice that many homeowners unfortunately grow accustomed to. When things seem bleak and they do not know what to do, it is a good idea to call somebody who does. Usually this is a professional contractor with the experience necessary to get a project out of deep water and back on the right track. When things get too hairy for the homeowner to handle themselves, finding a professional that knows what they are doing and perhaps has dealt with similar situations before will get the homeowner out of trouble and can save the project before it goes down the drain.

Obviously, the best way to avoid situations like this is to be completely honest about the skills the homeowner possesses. If the project is out of their ballpark, they should consider hiring a contracted painter from the get go. Too often do homeowners think that they know what they are doing and that painting is something that anybody can pick up in no time. They quickly find out, however, that exterior painting is much more complex than many may think. It can get out of hand quickly, and for many can become a nightmare if they do not know what they are doing.

Planning the project may help to alleviate some of the stress many homeowners feel during the project. A well-laid plan often means a smooth project. Developing an idea to the point that both the homeowner and the contractor know where they want the project to go will help to move things along nicely. If all parties are on the same page, then everybody will be able to work towards a common goal. Knowing where things are headed is often the key in making the correct call when things get out of hand or problems present themselves.

Hiring a contracted painter is one of the smartest things homeowners do when dealing with home improvement and remodeling projects. Having a good contractor handling the painting, homeowners can focus on other areas of the project or can just sit back and relax knowing their remodel is in good hands.

There are many ways you can go about selecting a company to paint the interior or exterior of your home, this article will discuss the ways.

Most people start off selecting a contractor through a recommendation from a friend. This is a great way to get going as you already have someone that has tried the business out and had a good experience with them. Even if you get a recommendation from a friend, you should consider getting multiple bids on your project - at least 3. One of the easiest ways to find a contractor is to go online. If you go to Google search and type in “Painting Contractor” you wil see a lot of names pop up. The right hand side of the screen is the paid advertising section (where Google makes all it’s money) and the left hand side is the organic search area.

After you’ve checked out a few painting company web sites, the next step is to set up a time for a bid on your project. After you’ve narrowed down your contractors, make sure to check that they are licensed and bonded to operate in your state. It’s also smart to ask for references so you can talk to them on the phone and then visually inspect the project to see if they can provide the quality you are looking for.

It’s also a good idea to check with the better business bureau. Many companies maintain membership there and they have a good system for logging customer complaints about all their member businesses.

We are licensed and bonded Seattle Painters and would be happy to look at your project. We are a reputable Painting Contractor that has done tons of projects in the area, check us out today!

By Vickie Faria. When homeowners are looking to make their house more attractive or increase its value, they often turn to remodeling as an answer. This can help to make the house look its very best and can bring the home to where the homeowner always envisioned it would eventually land. Painting the house is usually the project that makes everything look its very best and can tie everything together.

Exterior house painting is very important to the overall success of a remodeling endeavor. When the painting is taken care of, the rest of the project will fall into place nicely. Handing this work off to a contractor will ensure that things are put into the best hands possible, so that the project can succeed and the rest of the project will come together. When the house is painted to perfection, the landscaping will look better complimented by a well-painted house, as will the windows and doors and other projects. Often times homeowners wonder why their remodels do not live up to expectations.

This is often due to a poorly painted home, or one without a fresh coat of paint. If the paint job looks stale, then nothing will look right. A freshly painted house will pop and become noticeable to neighbors, friends and anybody passing by. Homeowners often overlook exterior house painting when they go to remodel their house. This is a shame, as a well-painted house can make their home look as they had envisioned it would. Anything less should be unacceptable.

By Suzanne Macguire. Does your home interior effuse dullness? If yes, then try changing it. Entirely revamping your home interior is an expensive affair but a dramatic effect can be easily produced by changing just the wall color. Walls make a great difference to the appearance of a room. Changing wall color once a year can be a refreshing solution. A fresh coat of paint makes your home look new once again. However, before changing the wall color, it is important to follow certain steps so that you don’t go wrong in the choice of colors.

For choosing colors, there are actually no rules! You will get lots of information about the preferable colors for your home, but it’s up to you to settle for the advice offered. Choose only those colors which you like and can live with. Generally bathrooms and kitchens are lighter colored while bedrooms or living space can be darker. You can also choose your wall color keeping in mind the furniture or carpet colors.

We are all well aware that colors affect the mood of a person. Roughly, they can be classified into 3 major groups:

Cool colors: Light shades of blue and green are considered to be cooler as they are soothing to the eyes. For a relaxed atmosphere, cool colors are the best.

Warm colors: Shades of red and yellow give a warm and lively ambience- an ideal place to be with friends.

Middle colors (Earth tones): Beige, gray, and taupe. These neutral colors offer a good contrast to the warm colors of your furniture or carpet.

Shades and tints can also bring out an amazing effect on your wall. Darker shades work best for large rooms while lighter shades give the illusion of a bigger space.

However, in spite of all the advice, it is very difficult to actually judge which color will work the best. The best thing is to look around and observe, talk to your friends and family. All these things will help you come to a better decision. Last but not the least, if you still remain confused on the issue, seek the advice of professional or commercial painters.

By Nicole Martello. Delays in a project are like the plague to many homeowners that wish to see their remodeling projects finished as soon as possible. The sooner they are finished, the sooner they can enjoy the hard work that went into planning and working on the projects. Hiring professionals to help with things is often the best way to ensure that everything is done in a timely manner without sacrificing quality.

Home contractor painting often holds a major advantage over any amateur painting job, as professionals will have the proper training to succeed. A successful project often makes homeowners not only very happy with the results, but it will also make things easier when it comes to handling problems that may arise. Home contractor painting also gives a big boost to the speed in which the project is completed. Trained to finish their work in a timely manner with no sacrifice to quality, professionals provide much better service than amateurs. Some may not consider professional work truly worth the cost of hiring these contractors, although many homeowners end up saving money when hiring professionals.

Homeowners often thwart their own plans of saving money by messing up a project so that they have to repurchase their materials or even to the point that they have to hire a contractor anyways to fix their problems. Either way, many homeowners often end up spending more money than they would have if they had gone with home contractor painting in the first place. It may not only save a good deal of money, but can save a tremendous amount of headaches and reduce the stress felt by the homeowner.

By Vickie Faria There are many reasons why homeowners should hire contractors to handle the larger, more complicated projects on their to-do lists. Some homeowners believe that just about anybody can handle these large projects, such as exterior painting, and attempt to do the project themselves without any proper training or research into the matter. What they quickly discover, however, is that exterior painting, like other large home improvement projects, is very complicated and requires the proper training and skill level to accomplish with any success.

A house painting contractor will have gone through this training and will be ready to tackle even the largest of exterior painting projects. With their skill and experience, contractors can provide homeowners with an excellently painted house in a timely manner. When homeowners try to accomplish these tasks quickly, they often make costly errors that become noticeable upon looking at the house. With a house painting contractor, homeowners will enjoy a professionally painted house in a timely and efficient manner without any sacrifice to the quality of the finished product. Now that is something any homeowner can get excited for.

Another good reason to hire a house painting contractor is the importance of the exterior painting job of any home. When a house is painted to perfection, it often reflects on the overall appearance of the home. Unattractive houses often have very poorly painted exteriors, while good-looking homes have been painted professionally and with attention to the details. So hiring a contractor to do the exterior painting pays off tremendously when it comes to moving through the project easily, and ensuring that the job is done properly.

Business Week Magazine reported this week that the “The seasonally adjusted PPI (Producer Price Index) for finished goods jumped a sharp 1% in January, after dropping in December by a revised 0.3%. The core PPI, minus volatile food and energy, rose 0.4%—considerably less, but still a worrisome number, twice what analysts had predicted. Perhaps most alarming, for the 12 months ended in January the PPI is up 7.4% on an unadjusted basis, the highest since October, 1981.”

Data such as this confirms the worry related to the acceleration of inflation seen in the CPI and PPI, and spotlights the Federal Governments dilemma in fighting recession while dealing with the upward creep in inflation within the US economy.

These inflationary trends can be seen in certain segments of the construction materials industry. For example, the cost of paint rose less in January 2009 than in previous months; however, paint is still significantly more costly (16%) today than it was three years ago.

PAINTS PRICING TRENDS:

12-08 to 01-09 .1%
11-08 to 12-08 5.3%
09-08 to 12-08 4.9%
12-07 to 12-08 16.7%
12-05 to 12-08 16.3%

The cost of interior latex semi-gloss paint rose steadily over the year in 2008, due to increased costs of raw materials and the reformulations required to meet new regulations for volatile organic compounds. Paint suppliers indicate that prices should be stable in 2009.
